“Revive the Sunnah of fasting on Mondays and Thursdays.”

The Virtue of Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays

In Islam, fasting (called ṣawm or ṣiyām ) is the practice of abstaining from food, drink, sexual activity, and anything that substitutes food and drink.

Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is a beautiful Sunnah (tradition) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that brings both spiritual and physical benefits. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Deeds are presented (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.”
(Narrated by Tirmidhi)

By fasting on these two days every week, Muslims follow the beloved practice of the Prophet ﷺ and seek to purify their hearts, strengthen their faith, and increase their closeness to Allah.

Spiritual Benefits

Fasting is not only an act of worship but also a reminder of patience, gratitude, and self-control. It helps the believer stay mindful of Allah throughout the day, control desires, and reflect on the blessings they often take for granted. Regular fasting on Mondays and Thursdays renews one’s intention to live a life pleasing to Allah.

Physical Benefits

Modern science has proven that fasting helps the body detox, improves digestion, boosts metabolism, and supports better mental clarity. It’s a natural way to rest the body while strengthening the soul.

A Weekly Opportunity for Growth

Fasting twice a week keeps the believer spiritually disciplined and connected to good habits. It also serves as a preparation for the blessed month of Ramadan, keeping the heart soft and ready for greater acts of worship.

Let us revive this Sunnah and encourage our families and children to fast on Mondays and Thursdays — for indeed, every act done for the sake of Allah brings reward and mercy.

Qur’anic Inspiration

“O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:183)
